Death toll from severe weather in Afghanistan rises to 110 amid widespread flooding
The death toll from extreme weather in Afghanistan has risen to at least 110 people , authorities said Monday, after torrential rain triggered widespread flooding, landslides and lightning strikes across much of the country, leaving thousands of families affected.
Storms and heavy rainfall began nearly 12 days ago and have affected most of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces , according to the National Disaster Management Authority. Officials said 11 people died and six were injured in the past 24 hours , while seven others remain missing , believed to have been swept away by floodwaters.
The disasters have injured at least 160 people , destroyed 958 houses completely and damaged more than 4,000 homes , officials said. Floods and landslides have also damaged farmland, irrigation canals, businesses and freshwater wells , affecting at least 6,122 families across the country.
Infrastructure has been badly hit, with more than 325 kilometres of roads destroyed and several major routes closed. The key Kabul–Jalalabad highway linking the capital with eastern provinces and the Pakistani border has remained shut since last week due to landslides.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan has also been dealing with other recent crises . On April 3, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region , killing 12 people and injuring several others , with tremors felt in neighbouring Pakistan and parts of India.
At the diplomatic level, Pakistan and Afghanistan have resumed talks in China aimed at easing border tensions and securing a ceasefire after weeks of clashes that disrupted trade and cross-border travel.
International organisations have also raised alarm about worsening humanitarian conditions , especially for women and displaced families, with millions requiring aid and access to basic services.
Authorities have issued nationwide weather warnings , urging residents to stay away from rivers and flood-prone areas as more rainfall is expected in the coming days.
