At least 26 people have died in separate rain-related disasters in Pakistan and Afghanistan, as heavy rains, floods, and landslides battered parts of the two countries, causing casualties and widespread damage.

In Pakistan, nine people were dead in rain-triggered incidents across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab provinces. The worst-affected area was Bannu, where six deaths and over 30 injuries were reported following building collapses caused by intense rainfall and strong winds. Among the incidents, a mosque veranda collapse claimed three lives, while another three, including children, died when a house caved in.

In Lahore, two people lost their lives after a roof collapsed under the impact of heavy rain, while in Bahawalpur, a motorcyclist was killed after slipping on a rain-soaked road . Authorities have issued warnings of more rain, strong winds, and possible flash flooding in the coming days, urging residents to remain cautious.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan reported a higher toll, with 17 people dead and 26 injured after floods, landslides, and thunderstorms struck multiple regions within a 24-hour period. According to officials, 13 out of 34 provinces mainly in the western, central, and northwestern parts have been affected.

The disaster has caused significant damage to infrastructure and agriculture , with around 147 homes destroyed or partially damaged and nearly 80 kilometres of roads washed away , disrupting connectivity and rescue efforts. Authorities cautioned that the death toll could rise as assessment teams continue surveying the affected areas.

The back-to-back incidents underline the growing impact of extreme weather events in the region, with both countries facing recurring challenges from seasonal rains and inadequate infrastructure. Earlier this year, Afghanistan experienced similar weather-related disasters that resulted in multiple fatalities, highlighting a continuing pattern of vulnerability.

Officials in both countries are closely monitoring the situation as emergency response efforts continue.
