At least one person was killed and several others injured on Monday when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in Woro community , located in the Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State .

The blast struck a commercial vehicle traveling along the Wawa-Kaiama road , a key route connecting Kwara with neighboring Niger State. The vehicle’s driver died instantly, while a woman traveling with a six-month-old baby was critically injured; the infant survived.

Security forces discovered and safely removed additional explosives near the site, preventing further casualties. Military personnel were deployed to the area to secure the scene and assist with rescue efforts.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, the region has seen the presence of armed actors such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province , both Islamist extremist groups, as well as non-ideological bandit networks operating across north-central Nigeria. While residents suspect these groups may be involved, authorities have not confirmed the perpetrators behind the explosion.

The incident has heightened fear across the community, which is still recovering from a massacre in February 2026 in nearby Woro and Nuku villages, where hundreds were killed and dozens kidnapped during extremist attacks.

Local leaders and security analysts have warned that this blast underscores the ongoing instability along rural transport routes and urged increased protection measures from security forces to prevent further attacks.
