De Kock rejoins, Bavuma sidelined

South Africa’s cricket landscape gets a major shake-up as Quinton de Kock reverses his ODI retirement, while Test captain Temba Bavuma is ruled out of the upcoming Pakistan series due to injury. De Kock’s return adds firepower to the Proteas’ white-ball squads, just as Bavuma’s absence poses a leadership challenge in the Tests.

De Kock, who last featured in white-ball cricket during the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados, has been included in both the ODI and T20I squads for the Pakistan tour. The left-handed opener had quit ODIs after the 2023 World Cup, leaving the team uncertain about his future. But new head coach Shukri Conrad, after discussions with the player, welcomed him back.

“Quinton’s return is a major boost,” Conrad said. “His ambition to represent South Africa remains strong, and the quality he brings will greatly benefit the team.” De Kock has played 155 ODIs, amassing 6,770 runs at an average of 45.74, and 92 T20Is with 2,584 runs at a strike rate of 138.32.

Meanwhile, Bavuma is still recovering from a grade-two calf strain suffered on the recent England tour. In his absence, Aiden Markram will lead the Test side. “Temba is doing everything to stay fit,” said Conrad. “We are confident in the medical team and his determination to return.”

The Proteas will start their ICC World Test Championship defence with two Tests in Lahore and Rawalpindi from October 12-24. The squads for Tests, ODIs, and T20Is feature a mix of experience and young talent, including David Miller, Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, and Dewald Brevis, alongside De Kock’s return.

South Africa fans will be eager to see if De Kock can fire the team to victory, even as they hope Bavuma recovers in time for future Tests.
