Davis Cup: India eye Final 8 berth against Korea on September 18-19

South Korea have chosen hard courts for their Davis Cup Qualifiers Round 2 tie against India, adding intrigue to a contest between two closely matched teams.

The tie will be played at the Olympic Tennis Centre in Seoul on September 18-19, with a place in the Davis Cup Final 8 at stake. India are ranked 19th in the Davis Cup standings, while Korea sit 16th. Korea also leads the head-to-head record 6-5.

India will announce their squad on August 10 as they prepare for an away assignment. The surface could prove significant, with Korean players traditionally more comfortable on hard courts. When the teams last met in 2016, India deliberately selected grass and went on to secure a 4-1 victory in Chandigarh in an Asia/Oceania Group I tie.

India booked their place in the second qualifying round after a 3-2 win over the Netherlands in Bengaluru in February. Dhakshineswar Suresh emerged as the performer, winning both his singles matches and combining with Yuki Bhambri to claim the doubles rubber.

Suresh then delivered under pressure in the deciding fifth match, defeating Guy den Ouden 6-4, 7-6(4) to seal India's victory. The result was important because it sent India into the second round for the first time since the present qualifying format was introduced in 2019.

Korea also produced an upset in the opening round, defeating 2016 champions Argentina 3-2 in Busan. Kwon Soonwoo played a key role in the comeback while still completing his military service, helping the hosts eliminate the South Americans.

The Seoul showdown will be a winner-takes-all battle, with the victor advancing to the Final 8 in November. Korea have previously reached the 16-team Davis Cup Finals in 2022 and 2023.

For India, the challenge is clear: overcome home advantage, adapt quickly to hard courts and reproduce the resilience that carried them past the Netherlands. With both teams separated by only three places in the rankings, the tie promises to be finely balanced from the opening rubber.
