Darul Uloom Deoband has reiterated its ban on smartphones for students and warned that those found carrying multimedia mobile phones may face expulsion from the institution , officials said on Thursday.

Academic activities at the seminary resumed after the Eid-ul-Azha (Bakrid) vacation , following which hostel superintendent Mufti Ashraf Abbas issued fresh instructions reinforcing existing campus rules.

Students had earlier been advised before leaving for the holidays not to bring smartphones when returning to the institution. However, they are permitted to carry basic keypad mobile phones solely for staying in touch with their families.

Abbas warned that strict action would be taken against any violation. “If any student is found carrying a multimedia mobile phone, his admission will be cancelled and his name struck off the rolls of the institution,” he said.

He added that such guidelines have been in place for several years, as the administration believes multimedia phones lead to waste of time and academic distraction .

Darul Uloom Deoband is among India’s most prominent Islamic educational institutions, known for maintaining strict discipline and traditional academic practices on campus.
