Danish tourist detained after entering restricted area near Indo-Pak border in Rajasthan

A 40-year-old Danish national was detained near the Indo-Pakistan international border in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district after he allegedly entered a restricted border zone without permission , triggering a multi-agency security probe, police said on Sunday.

The man, identified as Rene, a resident of Denmark , was found in suspicious circumstances on Hospital Road in Khajuwala , a sensitive area located close to the international border. Locals alerted police after noticing a foreigner moving around the locality, where outsiders and foreign nationals are rarely seen because of strict security regulations.

A police team led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Kishan Singh rushed to the spot following the alert. Given the strategic sensitivity of the border region, the police immediately informed the Border Security Force (BSF) and other security agencies, which later joined the questioning of the man.

During the initial search, no suspicious items were recovered from his possession, officials said. In preliminary questioning, the man stated that he had arrived in India around seven months ago on a one-year tourist visa .

Officials said he initially responded to questions in English but later stopped answering and reportedly broke down during questioning at the police station .

Bikaner Superintendent of Police Mridul Kachawa said the foreign national was detained because he did not possess the mandatory permit required for foreigners to visit restricted border areas. He has since been sent to the Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC) in Bikaner for detailed questioning by multiple security agencies.

Authorities are currently verifying his passport and travel documents and have initiated steps to contact the Danish embassy for further details about his background and travel history.

Police said Khajuwala is a sensitive border security zone where prior permission is mandatory for foreign nationals. While the initial assessment suggests the man may have entered the area unknowingly , investigators are examining all possible angles because of the strategic importance of the region.
