Dalai Lama inaugurates ‘VisitDharamshala.com’ to boost tourism in Kangra

In a major step to promote digital tourism in Himachal Pradesh, Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Friday inaugurated the official tourism website for Dharamshala, VisitDharamshala.com, during a soft-launch ceremony at his residence in McLeodganj. The platform aims to showcase Kangra Valley’s natural beauty, spiritual heritage, and cultural richness to global travellers.

The initiative has been spearheaded by the Dharamshala Hotel and Restaurant Association, with support from local entrepreneurs, adventure operators, and organisations like Waste Warriors. The launch event was attended by Association president Ashwani Bamba, Chairman Onkar Nehria, District Tourism Officer Vinay Dhiman, members of the executive committee, and other dignitaries.

Describing the website as “a milestone effort that will further strengthen Himachal’s tourism footprint on the global map,” the Dalai Lama welcomed the move to combine tradition with technology.

The portal offers a comprehensive guide for tourists, including detailed information on local attractions, monasteries, temples, lakes, waterfalls, adventure activities, cuisine, handicrafts, and cultural experiences. Visitors can check real-time weather updates, plan itineraries, and book rooms directly in over 100 verified hotels, including major 3-star and 4-star properties, with bookings confirmed instantly with the respective establishments.

“Our goal is to promote responsible and eco-friendly tourism while creating livelihood opportunities for local communities,” said Ashwani Bamba. He emphasised that only verified hotels, guesthouses, and service providers are featured on the website to ensure transparency and reliability.

The District Tourism Officer highlighted that Kangra, home to three Shakti Peethas and two major monasteries, has been declared a “tourism district” by the state government. The website is expected to serve as a vital digital bridge, connecting visitors to the region’s scenic landscapes, spirituality, and hospitality.

By leveraging digital tools, Dharamshala aims to position itself as a model for sustainable and smart tourism in the Himalayas, combining eco-conscious travel with convenience for both domestic and international tourists. With its global appeal enhanced by the Dalai Lama’s presence, the new platform seeks to make the region more accessible, informative, and visitor-friendly, blending tradition and modernity in the heart of Himachal Pradesh.
