Cyprus and Bangladesh Face Off in Race for UN General Assembly Presidency Vote Today
Bangladesh and Cyprus are locked in a closely watched diplomatic contest for the President of the 81st UN General Assembly (UNGA) , with the election scheduled for June 2 at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
The 193-member UN General Assembly will elect its next president for a one-year term through a secret ballot under the established regional rotation system , with the post this year reserved for the Asia-Pacific Group. The winner will succeed current President Annalena Baerbock as the UN prepares for a period marked by institutional transition and global geopolitical tensions.
The contest is between Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and Cyprus Special Envoy for Multilateralism Andreas Kakouris , both experienced diplomats with extensive multilateral backgrounds. Rahman previously served as National Security Adviser and handled the Rohingya issue, while Kakouris has held senior diplomatic postings including ambassadorial roles and top foreign ministry positions.
Additional reporting confirms that Palestine had earlier withdrawn from the race , turning the contest into a direct bilateral face-off. The vote will also take place just ahead of elections for five non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council , adding further diplomatic significance.
Both candidates have outlined reform-focused visions. Rahman has proposed priorities including climate action, inclusion, and development equity, while Kakouris has emphasized strengthening implementation, crisis prevention, governance reform, and institutional credibility.
The election comes amid global conflicts, financial strain on the UN system, and increasing calls for reform. The winner will preside over a session expected to deal with climate risks, development challenges, and preparations for selecting the next UN Secretary-General.
The outcome will determine who leads one of the UN’s most visible diplomatic platforms at a time of heightened global uncertainty.
