Cyclonic system over Bay of Bengal causes widespread heavy rain in Nellore

The Nellore district administration has sounded a full alert as heavy rains, fueled by a cyclonic weather system over the Bay of Bengal, lash the region. District Collector Himanshu Shukla has directed all departments, including Revenue and Police, to remain fully prepared for emergency response.

The Collector held a video conference with senior officials, emphasizing the need for immediate preparedness to handle any situation arising from the continuous heavy rainfall. He instructed authorities to evacuate residents from low-lying areas to safer locations and urged coastal residents and fishermen not to venture into the sea under any circumstances.

In view of the intense rains, all government, private, and aided schools, along with Anganwadi centres, remained closed on yesterday. The Collector also set up a 24-hour control room at the Collectorate, operational from October 21 to October 25, to monitor the situation and assist citizens. The heavy rainfall is attributed to a depression with cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. Although not classified as a named cyclone, this system is drawing moisture from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, resulting in sudden and widespread heavy rainfall in coastal Andhra Pradesh. Meteorologists note that such depressions are common during the northeast monsoon season, and their interaction with local geography, including low-lying areas, can intensify flooding.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu is also experiencing heavy rains in several districts, including Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, and the Delta region. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin conducted a video conference to review relief measures, ensuring that complaints from the public are acted upon immediately and that essential services, including rice procurement, continue without disruption. The Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, has issued orange and yellow alerts for multiple coastal and delta districts, valid for the next four days.

In Thoothukudi district, continuous rainfall prompted Social Welfare and Women’s Rights Minister P. Geetha Jeevan to convene a review meeting with officials at the Collectorate to ensure relief measures are in place.
