Cyclone Senyar update: Heavy rain likely in key Tamil Nadu districts on Nov 29

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) continues to track the rapid intensification of the weather system developing over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to strengthen into Cyclone Senyar in the coming days. The system, which formed over the Strait of Malacca and the adjoining southern Andaman Sea, has been moving west-northwest and gradually consolidating as it travels across warm ocean waters.

Meteorologists indicate that the disturbance is likely to develop into a depression by November 24 and intensify further into a cyclonic storm around November 26. The IMD has already placed southern and eastern coastal states under close observation, with early alerts issued for heavy rainfall, strong winds and rough sea conditions.

In a fresh update issued today, the Chennai Meteorological Department has warned that very heavy rainfall is likely on November 29 in seven districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The districts expected to be most affected are Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai, along with Puducherry. Officials have cautioned that the intensity of rain may lead to waterlogging, flooding in low-lying areas, and disruptions in road traffic.

Meanwhile, moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning continues to be reported across several parts of Tamil Nadu as the system evolves. Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry remain under active monitoring as the storm’s track becomes clearer.

Although the precise landfall point of the potential cyclone remains uncertain, disaster management authorities across vulnerable coastal regions have begun preparations, including checking drainage systems, issuing advisories to fishermen, and coordinating emergency response teams. Fishermen operating in the Andaman Sea and the southwest Bay of Bengal have been strongly advised to stay ashore due to rough sea conditions.

Residents in the affected districts have been urged to stay alert for further updates, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall, secure loose outdoor items and follow instructions from local authorities as Cyclone Senyar continues to intensify.
