
Cyclone Montha: IMD Issues Red Alert for Andhra Pradesh
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Andhra Pradesh as Cyclone Montha intensifies over the Bay of Bengal. The depression, which formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal, is expected to become a deep depression by October 26 and a cyclonic storm by October 27. By the morning of October 28, it is anticipated to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained winds of up to 110 km/h. The cyclone is likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, during the evening and night of October 28.
Impacted areas and duration
The cyclone is expected to affect coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, including Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, and Prakasam. The impact is anticipated from October 26 to October 29, with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough sea conditions. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.
Chief Minister's directions to District Collectors
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed all district collectors, superintendents of police, and other senior officials to take proactive measures in response to Cyclone Montha. The Chief Minister emphasized the need for preparedness to minimize loss of life and property. He instructed officials to alert coastal residents to evacuate to safer locations, declare holidays for educational institutions if necessary, and monitor water levels in all reservoirs. Additionally, he directed the Roads and Buildings, Energy, Irrigation, Municipal, and Panchayat Raj Departments to ensure continuous availability of water, power, mobile tower, and civil supply services.
As Cyclone Montha approaches the Andhra Pradesh coast, authorities are on high alert to mitigate potential impacts. Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay informed through official channels and follow safety instructions to ensure their well-being.
