
Cyberabad Police Book 294 Drunk Drivers in Weekend Enforcement Drive
In a major weekend enforcement drive, the Cyberabad Traffic Police (CTP) booked as many as 294 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol across different parts of the city.
According to traffic officials, the special drunk-and-drive inspections were conducted during the weekend to curb reckless driving and prevent road accidents caused by intoxicated motorists.
Among those caught, 255 were two-wheeler riders , while 34 were car drivers and five were auto-rickshaw drivers .
Police said breath analyser tests revealed varying levels of alcohol consumption among the offenders. A majority of the violators 244 persons recorded blood alcohol levels between 36 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml . Another 30 individuals registered levels between 201 mg/100 ml and 300 mg/100 ml , while 20 offenders showed alarmingly high levels ranging from 301 mg/100 ml to 550 mg/100 ml .
Traffic Additional DCP-1 G. Hanmantha Rao stated that all those apprehended would be produced before the court. He also warned that motorists responsible for fatal accidents while driving under the influence could face stringent action under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 .
Police noted that the provision carries a punishment of up to 10 years imprisonment along with a hefty fine in cases involving deaths caused by negligent drunk driving.
Officials further revealed that courts disposed of 156 drunk driving cases between May 18 and May 23, 2026 . Of these, 10 offenders received jail terms along with fines , one person was ordered to perform community service in addition to paying a fine , while 145 individuals were penalised with fines alone.
