Senior IPS officer C.V. Anand on Friday assumed charge as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Telangana . He succeeds B. Shivadhar Reddy , who retired on April 30 .

Speaking to the media after taking charge, Anand said that maintaining law and order , along with curbing cybercrime, drug menace, and road accidents , would be his top priorities.

Anand made key remarks on the alleged “phone tapping” case linked to the previous BRS government. He stated that he would personally review the investigation and ensure that the second chargesheet is filed soon . It may be noted that former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) has already been questioned by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in connection with the case.

Expressing concern over rising traffic congestion and road accidents , Anand said that around 7,500 people die annually in road accidents across Telangana. In Hyderabad alone , nearly 1,600 new vehicles are added to the roads every day. He revealed plans to establish a “Traffic Management and Road Safety Bureau” on the lines of the Cyber Security Bureau and the ‘EAGLE’ force to improve traffic regulation standards.

Anand said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) would be utilised in criminal investigations in line with evolving challenges. Alongside strict policing, awareness programmes will be conducted to tackle drug abuse and cybercrime.

He asserted that there is no scope for the revival of Naxalism in the state and assured that effective rehabilitation programmes for surrendered Naxalites would continue. Responding to the implementation of cow slaughter laws, he clarified that the issue would be handled solely by the police, and a dedicated helpline would be set up.

A 1991-batch IPS officer , Anand previously served as Special Chief Secretary (Home) before his appointment as DGP. He began his career as an ASP in Warangal Rural and spent his initial nine years in Naxal-affected areas .

He has participated in several encounter operations and was awarded the President’s Gallantry Medal for his bravery. Anand also served as the Hyderabad Police Commissioner in the past. He is set to continue as DGP until June 2028.

Meanwhile, the government has appointed B. Shivadhar Reddy as the State Security Advisor following his retirement.
