Telangana is set for a new phase in policing as senior IPS officer C.V. Anand has been appointed as the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) , with the government signalling a shift towards modern, technology-driven law enforcement . He is expected to assume charge on May 1, following the retirement of incumbent B. Shivadhar Reddy on April 30.

A 1991-batch IPS officer , Anand currently serves as Special Chief Secretary (Home) , placing him at the core of Telangana’s internal security framework . His appointment follows a formal selection process that evaluated experience , service record , and leadership credentials among senior officers, including Vinayak Prabhakar Apte and Soumya Mishra. In the end, his seniority and diverse policing background made him the preferred choice.

Widely recognised for his role in urban policing , Anand has previously served as Hyderabad Police Commissioner , Cyberabad Commissioner , and Traffic Commissioner . His tenure has been marked by a strong emphasis on technology-led policing , including expansion of e-challan systems , automated enforcement, and strengthening of cybercrime response mechanisms .

His administrative approach has focused on system-building and long-term reforms. Initiatives under his leadership have improved road safety , integrated digital policing tools , and enhanced public communication systems . His work in tackling narcotics networks and leading specialised enforcement units reflects a balanced approach combining prevention and targeted action .

Beyond field assignments, Anand has led key institutions such as the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and served in central security organisations, gaining experience in investigative oversight and national-level security operations . His contributions have been recognised with the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and the Police Medal for Gallantry .

Importantly, as per Supreme Court-mandated norms for police reforms, Anand is expected to have a minimum fixed tenure of two years as DGP , ensuring stability and continuity in leadership. While he is due to retire in 2028 , this provision guarantees him a secure tenure unless exceptional circumstances arise.
