Cummins, Lyon set for Adelaide return as Australia hunts series victory

Australia has made just one change for the crucial third Ashes Test in Adelaide but it is a significant one. Captain Pat Cummins is back. His return not only restores leadership at the top but also strengthens Australia’s fast-bowling attack as the hosts look to wrap up the five-match series early. With a 2–0 lead, Australia needs only a draw at the Adelaide Oval on December 17 to retain the Ashes, but the team is clearly preparing to push for a decisive victory.

Selectors named a 15-member squad on Wednesday, keeping the group flexible as the series resumes. Cummins, who hasn’t played since Australia’s 3–0 sweep against the West Indies in July, is set to rejoin the XI after recovering from back soreness that kept him out of the opening two Tests. His return is expected to restore balance and stability to the pace unit.

Off-spinner Nathan Lyon is also in line for a comeback after being left out of the eight-wicket win at the Gabba. Officials confirmed he will feature in Adelaide, adding experience and control to the bowling department.

Another major focus is opener Usman Khawaja. The 38-year-old is battling a back issue but remains optimistic about returning in time. His availability will determine whether Australia sticks with the temporary opening combination of Travis Head and Jake Weatherald, who stepped in at Brisbane. Head made starts of 33 and 22 after his match-winning century in Perth, while Weatherald provided stability at the top.

Australia’s squad blends experience and emerging talent, giving selectors enough flexibility depending on pitch conditions and player fitness. Alongside Cummins, the group includes Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Starc, Cameron Green and Alex Carey, forming the core of a side aiming to finish the series with authority.
