Cuba was hit by another nationwide blackout on Monday, leaving millions without electricity as the Caribbean nation grapples with a worsening energy crisis , dwindling fuel supplies, and an aging power grid that has become increasingly prone to collapse.

The state-run Electric Union confirmed the island-wide outage on social media platform X, stating that the cause of the blackout remains under investigation. The Ministry of Energy and Mines said emergency protocols had been activated to restore electricity across the country.

The latest outage comes amid a prolonged fuel shortage that has intensified Cuba's economic challenges. Since January, the country has struggled to secure sufficient fuel imports after US President Donald Trump threatened tariffs on countries supplying oil to Cuba, further restricting the island's access to energy resources. The measures have compounded an already severe financial crisis and strained essential public services.

The shortage has disrupted daily life across the country. Public transportation has been severely curtailed , while officials have reportedly postponed tens of thousands of surgeries due to unreliable electricity and limited fuel availability.

Cuba currently produces only around 40% of its domestic fuel requirements , relying heavily on imports to meet demand. A shipment of approximately 730,000 barrels of Russian oil delivered in late March was exhausted by the end of April, underscoring the country's dependence on external suppliers.

To conserve limited fuel, authorities have imposed scheduled power cuts , with some communities experiencing outages lasting more than 24 consecutive hours . The repeated interruptions have disrupted businesses, healthcare, education, and household life across the island.

Monday's blackout is the latest in a series of major grid failures. A widespread outage affected eastern Cuba in mid-May , while another nationwide blackout in mid-March exposed the fragility of the country's aging electricity infrastructure.

The recurring collapses highlight the mounting pressure on Cuba's power system, where decades of underinvestment, deteriorating infrastructure, limited fuel supplies, and economic sanctions continue to undermine the country's ability to provide reliable electricity. As authorities work to restore power, the blackout underscores the urgent need for long-term investment and a stable fuel supply to prevent further disruptions.
