Cuba Confirms Talks With US Officials, Seeks End To Trump-Era Energy Blockade

Cuba on Monday confirmed that it recently held high-level talks with US officials in Havana, as diplomatic contact resumes amid continuing tensions over Washington’s energy blockade and broader sanctions policy.

According to Cuba’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting included US assistant secretaries of state, while the Cuban side was represented at deputy foreign minister level. Officials described the exchange as “respectful and professional,” adding that no threats or deadlines were issued during the discussions.

The talks are understood to have taken place earlier in April and are being seen as part of a cautious diplomatic re-engagement , marking the first known visit by US diplomats to Cuba since 2016.

Cuban officials reiterated that lifting the economic blockade remains their top priority, calling it an unjust form of pressure that has severely affected the population amid fuel shortages and recurring power disruptions. Havana also argued that the restrictions amount to coercion against sovereign trade relations , particularly in energy imports.

The United States, meanwhile, is reported to have linked any easing of sanctions to a set of conditions including political reforms , the release of political prisoners , and broader economic liberalisation in Cuba.

Additional reports suggest that Washington has also explored parallel proposals involving digital connectivity and internet access expansion, alongside continued warnings of tariffs on countries supplying oil to Cuba .

The diplomatic development comes as regional criticism of US policy intensifies. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said Cuba is a victim of unilateral restrictions, calling the US blockade a “global disgrace” and urging the international community to oppose measures that deepen the island nation’s economic crisis.

Cuba continues to face severe economic strain, including energy shortages and inflationary pressures, while President Miguel Díaz-Canel has said the country is prepared to defend its sovereignty if external threats escalate.

Despite deep differences, both Washington and Havana appear to be maintaining dialogue channels, signalling early but cautious steps toward managing one of the Western Hemisphere’s longest-standing diplomatic standoffs.
