CSK Overhaul Gathers Pace as Mike Hussey Exits and Gareth Batty Joins

Five-time Indian Premier League champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have parted ways with long-serving batting coach Mike Hussey as the franchise continues a major overhaul of its coaching and support staff ahead of IPL 2027. Former England spinner Gareth Batty has joined the team as assistant coach to work alongside new head coach Zaheer Khan.

Hussey took over as CSK's batting coach in 2018 after representing the franchise as a player for six seasons. Announcing his departure on social media, CSK acknowledged his contributions since the inaugural IPL season in 2008, praising his batting achievements, mentorship, humility and commitment to the team.

The franchise also confirmed the departure of bowling coach Eric Simons, who had been part of the coaching setup since 2018. Former India pacer Mohit Sharma has replaced him. Assistant coach Rajiv Kumar, fielding coach James Foster and physiotherapist Tommy Simsek will also leave the backroom staff before the next season.

The sweeping changes follow CSK's inconsistent performances since winning the IPL title in 2023. The franchise finished fifth in 2024, last in the standings in 2025 and eighth in 2026. The disappointing results prompted CSK to end its long association with head coach Stephen Fleming, who has moved on to take charge of England's Test team. Zaheer Khan has taken over from Fleming, with IPL 2027 set to be his first assignment with CSK.

Batty, 49, has represented England in nine Tests, 10 ODIs and one T20 International. He is familiar with Zaheer through their time together at English county club Worcestershire. Batty subsequently established himself as a successful coach, guiding Surrey to three consecutive County Championship titles between 2022 and 2024. He also worked as an assistant coach with MI London in the revamped Hundred competition.

Expressing excitement about his new role, Batty described joining CSK as an exciting new journey for his family and himself. Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart praised Batty's knowledge, passion and determination to bring out the best in those around him.
