CRPF Considers Two Additional Ranks to Ease Promotion Bottlenecks
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), India's largest Central Armed Police Force, is considering restoring the military ranks of lance naik and naik, abolished nearly three decades ago, to address prolonged promotion delays, improve personnel morale and attract former Agniveers. The proposal could introduce two additional career advancement stages for constables, but its effectiveness will depend on time-bound promotions and clearly defined responsibilities.
According to PTI, CRPF headquarters has directed hundreds of field formations nationwide to organise Sainik Sammelans and gather personnel feedback within two days. The approximately 3.25-lakh-strong force is examining the proposal amid growing concerns over career stagnation.
The ranks were abolished in 1997 under a Ministry of Home Affairs order, merging them with the constable and head constable structure. Both ranks remain operational in the Indian Army. Under the earlier progression model, personnel could become lance naik after five years, naik after 10 years and head constable after 20 years. Currently, constables reportedly wait 22–25 years for their first promotion, despite published career guidance specifying minimum eligibility requirements alongside other conditions.
The restoration aims to create additional advancement opportunities and recognise experienced personnel. However, Ranbir Singh, secretary general of the Ex-Paramilitary Personnel Association, cautioned that promotions must be time-bound to make the exercise meaningful.
The proposal could also reshape junior supervision in battalions comprising more than 1,000 personnel. A senior CRPF commandant stressed that the change must not be cosmetic and should preserve discipline, regimentation and operational efficiency. Clear responsibilities, sanctioned posts, pay provisions and promotion rules will be crucial to avoid overlapping authority.
The move is also intended to attract former Agniveers, recruited under the Centre's four-year Agnipath scheme. The Ministry of Home Affairs announced 50% reservation for ex-Agniveers in designated constable/general-duty CAPF and rifleman Assam Rifles vacancies in July 2026, alongside age relaxations and specified recruitment exemptions. A dedicated wing was also announced to coordinate their progression.
Currently, CAPFs use an ad hoc senior-constable insignia equivalent to lance naik, but no corresponding naik arrangement exists.
