A nine-foot-long crocodile that entered the campus of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay early on Monday triggered concern among students and staff before being safely rescued by wildlife experts.

According to officials, security personnel spotted the reptile inside the campus located in the Powai area of Mumbai and immediately alerted the forest department control room.

Authorities said the crocodile is believed to have strayed from the nearby Powai Lake , which is known to be home to several crocodiles.

An eight-member rescue team comprising personnel from the forest department and members of the Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare (RAWW) rushed to the spot and safely captured the reptile.

Officials said the animal has been taken for a medical examination and kept under observation. It will be released back into its natural habitat after being declared fit by veterinarians.
