The overall crime rate in Telangana saw a slight decline in 2025, according to the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) B. Shivadhar Reddy. He reported that the total number of crime cases dropped to 229,000 this year, compared to 234,000 cases in 2024, reflecting a 2.33% decrease.

Addressing a media briefing in Hyderabad on Tuesday, DGP Shivadhar Reddy also noted that cases registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) decreased. In 2025, 167,000 IPC cases were recorded, down from over 169,000 in 2024, marking a 1.45% reduction. However, he pointed out that road accidents in the state increased by 5.6% compared to the previous year.

Certain serious crimes showed significant improvement. Kidnapping and abduction cases fell by nearly 25%, from 1,525 cases in 2024 to 1,145 in 2025. Incidents of rape also declined by over 13%, from 2,945 last year to 2,549 this year. Cybercrime in the state decreased by 3%, while national cybercrime statistics rose by 41% over the same period.

On the law enforcement front, more than 500 underground CPI (Maoist) cadres surrendered this year, including two central committee members and 11 state committee members, DGP Shivadhar Reddy added.

The Telangana Police Department is taking several innovative steps to raise awareness about the safety of women and children, said the DGP. As part of this, they are organizing short film and poster competitions. Enthusiasts aged 18 to 35 can participate. The DGP suggested creating short films of one minute focusing on women’s safety and designing posters that spread awareness.

At the same time, the representation of women officers in the police is gradually increasing. Women officers are efficiently handling key positions as directors, guiding the department. Additionally, for the first time in 60 years, an SI-level officer has been given the responsibility of Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), which the DGP called a historic decision.

The Telangana Anti-Narcotics Division’s ‘Eagle Team’ is working very effectively in controlling drugs. This year alone, they seized drugs worth ₹173 crore. The police are committed to stopping drug use and trafficking completely.

The Telangana Police have also shown their ability to manage international-level events. They successfully organized prestigious events like Miss World, Telangana Global Summit 2025, and Messi Football events without any untoward incidents.

Moreover, the three-phase Gram Panchayat elections were conducted impartially and peacefully, further strengthening people’s trust in democracy. Overall, the Telangana Police play a key role in safety, law enforcement, and spreading social awareness.
