Cricket Strengthens India–Jamaica Ties Through Sports Diplomacy: Jaishankar
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar underscored the power of sports diplomacy , particularly cricket, in strengthening bilateral relations between India and Jamaica , describing the partnership between the two nations as one “written in runs, respect and friendship”.
Speaking at the unveiling of a digital scoreboard gifted by India at the iconic Sabina Park cricket stadium in Kingston, Jaishankar said cricket serves as a powerful cultural and emotional bridge that connects people beyond geographical distance and political boundaries.
He noted that sports play a crucial role in building shared experiences and mutual respect among nations. In this context, he said cricket holds a “special meaning” for both India and Jamaica, given its deep popularity and historical significance in both societies.
Highlighting the role of sports diplomacy , Jaishankar explained that sport acts as a neutral platform for engagement , helping countries strengthen ties even outside formal diplomatic settings. He said such interactions promote people-to-people connections , which form the foundation of long-term international relationships.
He further said sports also help in softening differences and maintaining communication channels , even when political or economic challenges exist between nations. Friendly sporting exchanges and shared events encourage cooperation and reduce misunderstandings.
Jaishankar also emphasised how cricket fosters cultural exchange , as players, teams, and fans interact across borders, sharing traditions, values, and experiences. This, he said, helps build mutual understanding and trust between societies.
The minister noted that Jamaica, as part of the West Indies cricket legacy, has produced legendary cricketers such as George Headley, Michael Holding, Courtney Walsh, and Chris Gayle , who are widely admired in India, further deepening sporting ties.
Recalling historic moments at Sabina Park, he mentioned Rahul Dravid’s century and Virat Kohli’s Test debut in 2011 , calling them symbolic of the long-standing cricketing connection between the two nations.
Jaishankar said such sporting links also contribute to India’s soft power , enhancing its global image through admiration for its cricketing culture and talent. Similarly, Jamaica’s cricketing excellence strengthens its international reputation.
He also highlighted that sports diplomacy often leads to broader cooperation beyond the playing field , including youth engagement, training exchanges, and institutional partnerships.
Calling the newly installed scoreboard a symbol of solidarity and friendship , he said it would enhance the experience of cricket fans and stand as a reminder of the growing partnership between India and Jamaica.
Jaishankar added that despite geographical distance, both countries share a common identity as developing nations of the Global South , shaped by similar historical experiences and aspirations for progress.
He also recalled India’s assistance to Jamaica during natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic , reflecting deeper cooperation beyond sports.
In conclusion, he expressed hope that the scoreboard would witness many memorable innings and continue to reflect the growing India–Jamaica friendship , built not just on diplomacy but also on the enduring spirit of cricket.
