Cricket Mourns Amanpreet Singh Gill, Kohli’s U-19 Teammate Dies at 36
The Indian cricket community was left shocked and saddened on Wednesday after the sudden demise of former India U-19 and Punjab pacer Amanpreet Singh Gill at the age of 36 in Chandigarh. The cause of his death is yet to be officially confirmed.
Gill, remembered as a hardworking and disciplined cricketer, was part of a talented generation of young Indian players that included Virat Kohli and several future international stars. Though his cricketing journey did not fully blossom at the highest level, he remained a respected figure in Punjab cricket circles for his commitment to the game and his calm presence both on and off the field.
A right arm medium pacer, Gill represented Punjab in six first class matches and picked up 11 wickets. He was also associated with the then Kings XI Punjab franchise during the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League, a phase that marked the beginning of modern franchise cricket in India.
Beyond his playing career, Gill continued contributing to Punjab cricket by serving on the state senior selection committee, helping guide young talents toward professional cricket.
The Punjab Cricket Association expressed deep grief over his passing and offered condolences to his family. Tributes also poured in from former teammates and members of the cricket fraternity.
Former India all rounder Yuvraj Singh remembered Gill as a “quiet and hardworking cricketer who loved the game,” recalling their early dressing room days together. His emotional tribute reflected the respect Gill earned among fellow players despite spending limited time in the spotlight.
Gill had represented India in five Youth ODIs and one Youth Test in 2007. One of the memorable moments of his youth career was dismissing future Sri Lankan international Thisara Perera in the longer format. However, he narrowly missed selection in the Virat Kohli led India squad that went on to win the 2008 ICC U-19 World Cup.
His untimely death has once again reminded the cricket world of the many talented players whose journeys quietly shape Indian cricket from behind the scenes.
