CPI(M) Puts TVK on Notice Over AIADMK Rebel Inclusion in Cabinet
The political support base of the C Joseph Vijay led TVK government has come under fresh scrutiny after the CPI(M) made it clear that its backing is not unconditional and could be reconsidered under certain circumstances.
CPI(M) State Secretary P Shanmugam on Tuesday said that if the ruling TVK decides to include members of the AIADMK rebel faction in the Council of Ministers, the party would be forced to reassess its position of support to the government.
He underlined that the current support extended by the Left parties and the VCK is primarily aimed at ensuring political stability in Tamil Nadu and preventing what he described as the possibility of President’s Rule , which they view as a situation that could open the door for the BJP’s influence in the state .
Shanmugam explained that Tamil Nadu is not in a position for another immediate election and that the recent mandate did not deliver a clear majority to either the DMK or AIADMK led alliances . In this context, he said the decision was taken to allow the party with the largest mandate, TVK , to form the government and ensure continuity in governance.
He also pointed out that the support from outside was based on expectations of stable and clean governance . According to him, any move to bring in AIADMK rebel leaders into the Cabinet could be seen as going against both the public mandate and the principles on which support was extended.
At the same time, Shanmugam expressed confidence that TVK would not take such a step. However, he made it clear that if such a political decision is made, the CPI(M) would be compelled to reconsider its support arrangement.
On May 13 , the TVK government comfortably passed its floor test in the Tamil Nadu Assembly with backing from 25 AIADMK rebels , along with support from an expelled AMMK MLA , the Left parties , VCK and IUML , strengthening its position in the House.
The latest statement adds a new layer of political caution to an already complex post election equation in Tamil Nadu , where alliances remain fluid and closely watched.
