CPI(M) leader Isaac apologises over ‘joker’ remark against Congress candidate Pisharody

CPI(M) leader T M Thomas Isaac on Monday apologised to Congress candidate Ramesh Pisharody for referring to the actor-turned-politician as a “joker” contesting from Palakkad , saying the remark had hurt him and clarifying that it was not intended to question his acting abilities.

Isaac, a former Kerala finance minister, had made the comment on Sunday while responding to UDF allegations of a CPI(M)–BJP deal in Palakkad during the campaign. Criticising the charge, he had remarked that such claims were being made because the Congress had fielded a “joker” instead of a widely accepted candidate.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Isaac said he regretted the statement and emphasised that his words were made strictly in a political context . “I did not mean to say anything against his acting talent,” he said, adding that he was apologetic because the remark had caused hurt.

Earlier, Pisharody said he would not respond in the same tone to a senior leader like Isaac, asserting that he has “culture” and respect for democratic freedom . “Congress, which ruled the country, has given the freedom to express opinions. We have the right to comment on others. Let him make his comments using that freedom,” he said.

When asked whether he too had the same freedom of speech, Pisharody reiterated that he also has “culture” , adding that culture is not something gained through protests. He also recalled the role played by artistes associated with the Kerala People’s Arts Club (KPAC) in popularising the communist movement in the state and questioned why leaders now appear hostile towards artists who do not align with them.

The actor, who has been active in the arts for over two decades , said he has performed on more than 3,000 stages , acted in over 50 films , and written two film scripts , adding that he has maintained dignity in his artistic career and expects similar decorum in politics.

Pisharody added that he continues to respect Isaac as a senior political leader.

Isaac also said his remark came in response to allegations of a CPI(M)–BJP understanding in Palakkad , dismissing them and asserting that the LDF is confident of winning the seat. The controversy comes amid intensified campaigning ahead of the April 9 election to the 140-member Kerala Assembly .
