A sessions court on Monday rejected the bail plea of former Lodha Developers director Rajendra Lodha in connection with an alleged ₹181 crore corporate land fraud case , observing that economic offences involving breach of fiduciary duty erode public confidence in commercial and financial institutions.

Additional Sessions Judge P. A. Sable said the investigation has, at this stage, revealed Lodha's alleged key role in a decade-long conspiracy involving the unauthorized sale of company-owned land. According to the prosecution, he misused his position to sell valuable properties to developers at undervalued prices and conspired with several accused, including his son Sahil Lodha , by using fabricated documents to legitimize the transactions.

Investigators estimate the alleged fraud has caused losses exceeding ₹181 crore , with the amount likely to increase as the probe continues. The prosecution opposed bail, describing Lodha as the "principal architect" of the conspiracy and arguing that his release could influence witnesses and hamper the ongoing investigation, including a pending auditor's report.

The defence argued that Lodha acted within the authority granted by the company's board, denied any wrongdoing, and sought bail on medical grounds, citing diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease and previous bypass surgery.

The court, however, found the allegations serious in nature , noting that the prosecution's concerns over witness tampering and interference with the investigation were well-founded. It also held that prison authorities are capable of providing appropriate medical care.

The case forms part of broader real estate fraud investigations , highlighting increased scrutiny of alleged corporate land scams involving forged documents, unauthorized property transfers and abuse of fiduciary positions.
