Congress Sweeps Telangana Municipal Polls
The ruling Congress registered a decisive victory in the Telangana municipal elections, consolidating its hold over urban local bodies and delivering a major political boost to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy . The results, declared on Friday, underline the party’s growing dominance in towns and cities and set the stage for mayoral and deputy mayoral elections scheduled for February 16 .
Across 112 municipalities , Congress won 79 , while the Bharat Rashtra Samithi secured 25 , the Bharatiya Janata Party four , and others the remaining four . In the seven municipal corporations , Congress emerged victorious in four , BJP won one , while two corporations returned hung verdicts , reflecting a fragmented mandate in a few key urban centres even as Congress surged ahead statewide.
At the ward level, Congress won 1,347 of the 2,582 wards contested, well ahead of its rivals. A total of 36 municipalities returned hung councils, giving independents a crucial role in the post-poll arithmetic ahead of mayoral elections.
In the municipal corporations, Congress posted clear wins in Ramagundam, Mahbubnagar, Mancherial and Nalgonda . Nizamabad went to the BJP, while Karimnagar and Kothagudem returned fractured verdicts, with no party securing a clear majority and independents holding the balance of power.
The elections also produced several notable moments. Telangana recorded its first-ever victory by a transgender candidate in a municipal election, a landmark development in local body politics. The polls also saw the JanaSena Party opening its account in Telangana’s municipal elections, with victories in Nereducherla municipality (Suryapet district) and a ward win in Mancherial municipality , marking its first successes in the state’s urban polls.
Reacting to the verdict, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said the results were a clear endorsement of his government’s performance, describing them as “a certificate from the people” for two years of public administration. He said the mandate would be used to accelerate development across municipalities and strengthen urban infrastructure and civic services. Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka said the outcome reflected growing public confidence in Congress-led governance.
With newly elected corporators set to take oath on February 16 and mayoral elections to follow the same day, attention now turns to post-poll alignments, particularly in hung councils and corporations. For now, the results firmly place Congress and A. Revanth Reddy at the centre of Telangana’s urban political landscape.
