Congress Sweeps 12 of 14 Unopposed Wards in Telangana Municipal Polls
Polling for Telangana’s municipal and municipal corporation elections will be held on February 11 , with vote counting on February 13 , as per the election schedule. The nomination process has concluded and, following the withdrawal deadline, the Telangana State Election Commission released details of wards where candidates were elected unopposed .
Across the state, 14 municipal wards were declared unanimously decided. Of these, nominees from the Indian National Congress secured victory in 12 wards without facing any contest, while the Bharat Rashtra Samithi won the remaining 2 wards unopposed. Political observers describe this as an early morale boost for the Congress at the grassroots level, with party leaders stating that the results reflect growing public support in local bodies.
Election officials confirmed that the process has so far been conducted smoothly in accordance with commission norms. Statewide, nearly 12,993 candidates remain in the fray across about 2,996 wards in over a hundred urban local bodies, indicating that while a handful of seats were uncontested, the vast majority will witness direct electoral battles.
Local political dynamics appear to have played a key role in the uncontested outcomes. Reports suggest that withdrawals , party negotiations , and internal candidate adjustments led to rivals stepping aside in certain wards. In some places, independents and smaller-party aspirants reportedly pulled out after local-level understandings, pointing to strategic coordination rather than coincidence.
The unopposed victories allow parties, especially the Congress to redirect campaign resources toward more competitive constituencies. However, analysts caution that these early wins do not necessarily predict overall results, as most wards still face multi-cornered contests. Factors such as voter turnout , rebel candidates , and last-minute local issues could influence outcomes when polling takes place.
With preparations underway, authorities say logistics, polling personnel deployment, and security arrangements are in place. The focus now shifts to February 11, when voters in the remaining wards will decide the composition of urban local governance across Telangana.
