Congress hit by fresh blow in Assam as state chief Bhupen Borah resigns ahead of polls

In a major setback to the Congress ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam, expected to be held in March-April 2026, former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Kumar Borah has resigned from the party, adding to the political churn within the state unit.

According to party sources, Borah submitted his resignation letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge . In his communication, he reportedly expressed dissatisfaction over being “ignored” by the party leadership and not being accorded his due role in the state’s political affairs.

Speaking after stepping down, Borah said, “I don’t consider it necessary to explain why I resigned at this moment. I have submitted my resignation and sent it to the high command.” On the possibility of joining another party before the elections, he added, “No party has given me any proposal till now.” His statements have intensified speculation about internal differences within the Assam Congress at a politically sensitive time.

Borah served as the president of the Assam Congress unit from 2021 to 2025 and was replaced last year by Gaurav Gogoi as part of a leadership reshuffle aimed at revamping the party’s state strategy.

A two time legislator, Borah has been one of the prominent faces of the Congress in Assam. His resignation comes at a crucial juncture when the party is trying to consolidate its base and project unity before voters head to the polls.

With elections just months away, the development adds uncertainty to the Congress’s campaign preparations in the state and raises fresh questions about internal cohesion as the political battle intensifies.
