Congress Fields Abhishek Singhvi, Vem Narender Reddy for Telangana Rajya Sabha Seats
The Congress party has moved to consolidate its parliamentary representation from Telangana by fielding Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Vem Narender Reddy as its candidates for the two Rajya Sabha seats falling vacant from the state. Both leaders filed their nomination papers at the Telangana Legislative Assembly on Thursday in the presence of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and senior party figures.
The election is being held as the current terms of Abhishek Manu Singhvi and former Assembly Speaker K. R. Suresh Reddy scheduled to end on April 9 , prompting the Election Commission to conduct biennial Rajya Sabha polls on March 16 . With the Congress holding a majority in the 119-member Assembly , the party is well placed to secure both seats.
Political circles expect the two nominees to enter the Upper House without a contest , as the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has not signaled plans to field candidates. If no rival nominations are filed, Singhvi and Narender Reddy are likely to be elected unanimously .
For Singhvi, a senior advocate of the Supreme Court and a key legal voice for the Congress, the nomination represents a continuation of his association with Telangana in Parliament. He previously served as a Rajya Sabha member from the state after winning a by-election , and is widely regarded for his role in major constitutional debates and legal battles. After filing his nomination, Singhvi thanked AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge , Sonia Gandhi , Rahul Gandhi , and Chief Minister Revanth Reddy for their trust, stating that he would continue to champion Telangana’s interests in national policy discussions.
The party’s second nominee, Vem Narender Reddy , is a trusted aide of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and has played an active role in the Congress organization in the state. A former associate of the Telugu Desam Party , he joined the Congress along with Revanth Reddy in 2017 and has since been involved in strengthening the party’s political network.
Speaking after submitting his nomination, Narender Reddy said he would work to raise Telangana’s development concerns and public issues in the Rajya Sabha and ensure the state’s voice is effectively represented at the national level.
With the nomination process nearing completion and no opposition challenge in sight, the Congress appears set to secure both Rajya Sabha seats from Telangana , further reinforcing its political momentum following its recent electoral success in the state.
