Congress Factionalism in Punjab Intensifies, 15 MLAs Seek Rahul Gandhi’s Intervention

The internal differences within the Punjab Congress have intensified, with 15 party MLAs seeking a meeting with Rahul Gandhi amid growing concerns over factionalism and preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections.

According to party sources, the MLAs have written to Rahul Gandhi requesting a meeting. While one of the legislators confirmed that the letter had been sent, the exact agenda was not disclosed. However, party insiders said the meeting is likely to focus on the continuing infighting within the state unit and the Congress strategy for the upcoming 2027 Assembly polls.

The latest friction follows the Congress decision on July 1 to retain Amrinder Singh Raja Warring as Punjab Congress president while appointing former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi as chairman of the party's campaign committee.

The decision triggered opposition from a section of leaders aligned with Channi, who had sought Warring's removal. Channi's supporters have also been pressing for him to be projected as the party's chief ministerial face for the 2027 elections.

The differences became particularly apparent during the Congress' 'Har Booth, Congress Mazboot' campaign, held from July 31 to August 8. Supporters of Channi raised slogans in his favour at several meetings, while verbal clashes between supporters of Channi and Warring were reported at various events.

The situation also drew attention during Congress general secretary in-charge for Punjab Bhupesh Baghel's six-day visit to the state. Posters carrying the message "Go back Baghel" surfaced in Muktsar, highlighting the extent of dissatisfaction within sections of the party.

Baghel had visited Punjab and held discussions with party leaders following the dissent over Warring's continuation as state chief.

Channi, however, later sought to play down the differences. After meeting AICC general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal in Delhi on July 16, he said that "all is well" and maintained that he and other leaders would follow decisions taken by the party high command.
