Congress dominates Telangana Gram Panchayat elections

The ruling Congress party has reinforced its political dominance in Telangana by securing a clear edge in the recently concluded Gram Panchayat elections. Although the elections were officially non-party based, candidates backed by Congress won a majority of Sarpanch and ward member positions across the state.

The elections were seen as an important political test for Congress, BRS, and BJP, especially after Congress’ recent victory in the Jubilee Hills Assembly by-election. The results indicate that Congress continues to enjoy strong grassroots support.

The three-phase elections were held across the state between December 11 and 17. Out of a total of 12,726 Sarpanch posts, Congress-supported candidates won 6,726 seats, accounting for nearly 53 percent of the total. The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) secured 4,031 seats (32 percent), finishing second, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to win only 697 seats.

The official statistics for the Telangana Gram Panchayat elections held from December 11 to 17 are as follows:

Sarpanch Election Results - 2025

According to the State Election Commission, the elections recorded a high voter turnout of 85.30 percent across all three phases. Around 1.66 crore voters exercised their franchise, reflecting strong public participation in local governance.

Political observers believe the Congress victory reflects public confidence in the government led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, which recently completed two years in office. Welfare schemes, particularly those related to farmers and healthcare, are seen as key factors behind the party’s strong rural performance.

Elections were held in 31 districts, and Congress emerged dominant in 30 districts, with Siddipet being the only exception. The party registered near clean sweeps in districts such as Nalgonda, Khammam, Rangareddy, and Mahabubnagar.

While BRS lost ground overall, analysts note that the party continues to retain a significant presence in rural Telangana and remains a strong opposition force. BJP, on the other hand, struggled to make an impact in rural areas, extending its recent setbacks, including the loss of deposit in the Jubilee Hills by-election.

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee President B. Mahesh Kumar Goud said the results show that villagers have once again endorsed Congress governance, calling the outcome proof of the government’s effective administration.

Responding to the results, BRS Working President K. T. Rama Rao alleged misuse of official machinery by the ruling party. He claimed that despite pressure tactics and inducements, BRS won over 4,000 Panchayats, calling it a sign of growing public dissatisfaction with the Congress government. He further asserted that the results signal a political setback for Congress ahead of the 2028 elections.

The newly elected Sarpanchs and ward members are scheduled to take oath on December 22.

Due to legal issues related to BC reservations, the government conducted elections only for Gram Panchayats, while polls for other local bodies such as ZPTCs were postponed.
