Ruling Congress candidates Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Vem Narender Reddy are set to be elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Telangana , as the main opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) did not field a candidate in the biennial election to the Upper House of Parliament.

Singhvi and Narender Reddy filed their nominations at the Telangana Legislative Assembly in Hyderabad on Thursday . The nominations were submitted in the presence of A. Revanth Reddy , D. Sridhar Babu , and other Congress leaders.

With Thursday being the last date for filing nominations , the absence of a BRS candidate has paved the way for both Congress nominees to be elected unopposed .

Though an independent candidate filed nomination , official sources said it is likely to be rejected during scrutiny , as a candidate must be proposed by at least 10 MLAs to contest the Rajya Sabha election.

Singhvi, a senior Supreme Court advocate , has been renominated from Telangana after completing about one and a half years of his earlier term in the Rajya Sabha. Speaking to reporters, he expressed gratitude to the Congress leadership for renominating him and said he would continue to work for the public interest of the state .

He thanked Mallikarjun Kharge , Sonia Gandhi , Rahul Gandhi , and Chief Minister Revanth Reddy for their support.

Narender Reddy, a close aide of the Chief Minister , said he would work to protect Telangana’s interests in the Rajya Sabha . He has been serving as advisor to the Chief Minister since December 2023. Narender Reddy and Revanth Reddy had earlier worked together in the Telugu Desam Party before joining the Congress.
