Cong MP Shashi Tharoor’s Gunman and Driver Attacked in Kerala One Held
The gunman and driver of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor were allegedly attacked by a five-member group in Wandoor in Kerala’s Malappuram district, police said on Saturday, adding that one person has been taken into custody .
According to police, the incident occurred around 7:30 pm on Friday at Chelithode near Thiruvali when Tharoor was travelling to attend an election campaign event of Congress leader A P Anilkumar. Tharoor was present in the convoy but remained unharmed , officials confirmed.
As per the FIR, the accused, travelling in two vehicles, blocked the MP’s convoy on a narrow road near a bridge. When the gunman attempted to clear the obstruction and requested the vehicle ahead to move, a verbal altercation escalated into an assault on him and the driver.
Police said the complaint was lodged by the gunman, Ratheesh K P, following which a case was registered. Preliminary findings suggest the incident stemmed from a road rage-like situation rather than a pre-planned attack .
Officials have identified the remaining accused and said efforts are underway to apprehend them. At present, there is no evidence of any organised crime or gangster links , and the incident is being treated as a localised altercation .
The episode occurred amid ongoing political campaigning in the state, but authorities have so far found no indication of a targeted or politically motivated attack . Further investigation is in progress.
