Confident Group Chairman C J Roy Dies by Suicide Amid Income Tax Raid

Confident Group chairman C J Roy died by suicide on January 30, 2026 , at his office in Langford Town, Bengaluru , during an ongoing Income Tax raid , police confirmed. The incident has prompted widespread reactions from family, political leaders, and associates, raising questions about investigative practices and pressures on high-profile individuals.

According to reports, Roy allegedly shot himself in the chest with his licensed pistol while I-T officials from Kerala and Bengaluru were conducting a search operation at his office. He reportedly excused himself from questioning to retrieve documents and asked for privacy to speak with his mother on the phone. Shortly afterward, a gunshot was heard , and he was found dead.

Roy’s brother, C J Babu , emphasized that Roy had no financial troubles or loans , stating, “Other than the income tax issue, he had no other issues.” Family and close associates said that the businessman had been under sustained mental fatigue and stress from repeated raids, including earlier searches in December 2025 , and may have feared damage to his public image and reputation due to intense scrutiny. CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP A A Rahim demanded a comprehensive probe , stating that the real circumstances behind Roy’s death must be brought to light , including any undue pressure from authorities. The Karnataka government has promised a high-level investigation into the raid and subsequent death.

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal , a close friend and collaborator of Roy, condoled the loss, describing it as “deeply painful and unreal.” He remembered Roy as a friend and professional associate , highlighting their collaboration on two films produced under the Confident Group banner , and said he would always be remembered with love and warmth .
