Complaint filed against ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ over alleged religious insensitivity
A Mumbai-based Sikh organisation has filed a police complaint against the makers of “Dhurandhar: The Revenge” and actor Ranveer Singh , alleging that a promotional visual linked to the film has hurt religious sentiments.
The complaint, submitted at Mulund police station by a group identifying itself as “Sikhs in Maharashtra,” objects to a depiction of the lead actor in Sikh religious attire wearing a turban, beard, and kada while holding a cigarette. The complainants argue that such a portrayal is disrespectful, as these articles are considered sacred in Sikhism and are expected to be represented with dignity.
Police officials confirmed that no First Information Report (FIR) has been registered so far, and a preliminary inquiry is underway to assess the merits of the allegations.
The controversy comes amid the film’s strong commercial performance. Directed by Aditya Dhar, the film released on March 19 and has reportedly crossed ₹700 crore at the global box office. It is a sequel to the 2025 blockbuster “Dhurandhar” , which earned over ₹1,000 crore worldwide.
“Dhurandhar: The Revenge” explores the backstory of its central character, tracing his transformation from Jaskirat Singh Rangi to a covert operative navigating the Karachi underworld. The film has been released in multiple languages, including Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam.
The incident underscores recurring tensions between cinematic expression and religious sensitivities, particularly in the portrayal of cultural and faith-based identities in mainstream cinema.
