Como Make Champions League History With Record-Breaking 9-1 Rout of Lens
Como produced a sensational performance to make Champions League history, becoming the first away team to score nine goals in a single match after crushing French side Lens 9-1 on Wednesday.
The emphatic victory marked another milestone in Como's debut season in Europe's premier club competition. Managed by former Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, the Italian side have now registered three wins from their first four matches, climbing to fourth place in the league-phase standings.
Tasos Douvikas led the attacking charge with a brilliant hat-trick, taking his tally to six goals and making him the competition's leading scorer. The forward has now found the net in all four of Como's Champions League matches.
The previous highest scoring tally by an away team was eight goals, although Bayern Munich's famous 8-2 victory over Barcelona in 2020 came at a neutral venue in Lisbon. Como's nine-goal haul also equalled the competition's biggest winning margin, matching Liverpool's 8-0 victory over Besiktas and Real Madrid's 8-0 triumph against Malmo.
Nico Paz was also among the scorers, but his goal carried an emotional message. Instead of celebrating, he displayed a T-shirt featuring Jesús de Miguel, the Tenerife forward who died following an on-field collision with an opposing goalkeeper. Paz had spent time in Tenerife's youth system between 2014 and 2016.
Lucas Da Cunha, Marc-Oliver Kempf, Mattia Liberali, Martina Baturina and Matteo Papaccioli completed the scoring. The 18-year-old Papaccioli's goal was particularly special, as the youth-team player made his appearance from the bench despite not having played in Serie A yet.
Reflecting on the historic night, Fabregas said everything had gone Como's way, describing it as a great occasion for the club and its supporters.
