Comic Artist Ramon K Perez Calls ‘RRR’ And ‘Singham’ Superhero Films
Award-winning Canadian comic book creator Ramon K Perez has said Indian films such as “RRR” and “Singham” are redefining the superhero genre through larger-than-life storytelling, powerful characters, and high-energy action rooted in everyday heroes.
Speaking to PTI on the sidelines of Comic Con 2026 in Mumbai, Perez praised Indian cinema for presenting ordinary characters with extraordinary courage and screen presence, qualities he believes closely resemble modern superhero narratives.
“I love the energy; I like these superhero movies with regular characters,” Perez said while referring to SS Rajamouli’s blockbuster “RRR” and Rohit Shetty’s cop drama “Singham”. He added that streaming platforms such as Netflix are already introducing such Indian stories to global audiences and there is growing scope for adapting them into comic books or Western formats.
The Telugu period action film “RRR” , starring NTR Jr and Ram Charan , received worldwide acclaim and earned an Academy Award for the song “Naatu Naatu” at the 95th Oscars. Meanwhile, Ajay Devgn-starrer “Singham” became one of Hindi cinema’s most recognisable action franchises with its fearless police protagonist and stylised action sequences.
Perez, known for acclaimed comic titles including “Nova: Resurrection”, “The Amazing Spider-Man: Learning to Crawl”, and “All-New Hawkeye”, also reflected on the changing landscape of superhero entertainment in Hollywood. According to him, the issue is not “superhero fatigue” but the excessive production of formula-based films without enough creativity or emotional depth.
He observed that iconic comic characters from Marvel and DC, many of whom originated in the 1940s and 1950s, must continue evolving to reflect changing societies and newer generations. Perez stressed that modern audiences come from diverse cultural backgrounds and expect stories that mirror their realities and struggles.
The artist also welcomed the recent resurgence in comic books, highlighting the popularity of DC Comics’ “Absolute Batman” , which he described as one of the highest-selling comic titles in decades. He pointed out that comic book readers and superhero movie audiences often differ, even though there is some overlap between the two.
During his visit to Mumbai, Perez expressed curiosity about India’s own comic book culture and superhero traditions, saying he wanted to understand the “flavour of India” in storytelling. He also revealed that after decades of working on Marvel and DC properties, he is now focusing on developing his own original characters and stories.
Speaking about his first experience in Mumbai, Perez said he was fascinated by the city’s architecture, crowds, and vibrant atmosphere, while also enjoying local dishes such as kebabs, keema, and chicken lollipop at the iconic Café Leopold.
