‘Cockroach Janata Party’ Sparks Debate on Youth Anger and Unemployment Concerns: Palla Srinivasa Rao
Responding to the rapidly growing online movement known as the “Cockroach Janata Party” (CJP) , Andhra Pradesh Telugu Desam Party president Palla Srinivasa Rao said the trend reflects the aspirations, anxieties and frustrations of the country’s youth.
The movement, which has spread widely across social media platforms and sparked intense political debate, should be viewed as an indication of the concerns young people have regarding employment opportunities, governance and their future prospects, he said on Sunday.
Speaking on the issue, Palla stated that the governments led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu have consistently prioritised youth empowerment through job creation, economic reforms and digital initiatives aimed at attracting global investment.
He said the emergence of such online campaigns underlines the need for policymakers to continuously reassess government policies in line with the expectations of younger generations. According to him, the concerns being voiced by youth would be brought to the attention of decision-makers.
At the same time, Palla acknowledged that rising unemployment and certain recent public remarks may have contributed to growing dissatisfaction among young people. He urged social media users to act responsibly and cautioned that online discourse could be influenced by external forces pursuing vested interests.
Stressing that India is moving rapidly on the global stage, he said some groups may attempt to derail the country’s progress through organised digital campaigns. As an NDA ally, the TDP remains committed to policy-driven governance and expanding employment opportunities for the youth, he added.
Meanwhile, Kerala BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar strongly criticised the campaign, alleging that it was part of a coordinated attempt to destabilise the Union government led by Narendra Modi.
Targeting opposition parties, he claimed that parties such as the Trinamool Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and Congress had failed to adequately support youth welfare while in power, and were now attempting to politically capitalise on the issue.
The controversy surrounding the “Cockroach Janata Party” movement originated from a court-related discussion that evolved into a satirical online protest. Social media posts claimed that Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant had referred to social media activists and unemployed youth as “cockroaches” and “parasites” during court proceedings.
However, the CJI later clarified that his remarks had been misrepresented and were directed only at individuals allegedly using fake law degrees.
Despite the clarification, the issue had already gone viral online. Gen Z and millennial users subsequently adopted the term “cockroach” as a sarcastic symbol of protest, transforming it into the now-trending “Cockroach Janata Party” digital movement.
Within days, the campaign reportedly gained massive traction on social media and triggered wider discussions on unemployment, the education system and the future of young Indians.
As the movement gathered momentum, social media platform X announced that the account @CJP_2029 , which had emerged as a key hub for the campaign, had been withheld in India following legal demands.
