Coalition Govt Stands Firm with Farmers: Minister Atchannaidu
The Andhra Pradesh government has reiterated that farmers’ welfare remains at the core of its policies, with Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu asserting that every possible step is being taken to protect cultivators’ interests. He made it clear that the government is determined to procure every grain produced in the state to ensure farmers receive fair prices.
Speaking during a video conference with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan , Kinjarapu Atchannaidu outlined the current agricultural situation in Andhra Pradesh, with particular focus on Bengal gram and maize crops. He urged the Centre to extend timely assistance to address procurement challenges.
The minister noted that Bengal gram production has reached a record 7.13 lakh metric tonnes this season due to increased cultivation. While 94,500 metric tonnes have already been procured, a substantial quantity remains unsold with farmers. In response, the Centre has approved an additional procurement of 15,000 metric tonnes under the Price Support Scheme. The state has also sought procurement of the remaining 68,750 metric tonnes , expressing hope that further approvals will be granted soon.
Kinjarapu Atchannaidu also raised concerns over maize farmers, pointing out that cultivation has expanded significantly due to crop diversification. However, falling international prices have created uncertainty, raising the risk of financial losses for farmers. He appealed to the Centre to consider establishing procurement centres for maize, even though it is not typically covered under the Public Distribution System, citing the need for special intervention under current conditions.
The Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan assured that the issue would be taken up with Union Food Minister Pralhad Joshi , and that a favourable decision would be made soon. Reiterating the state’s stance, Kinjarapu Atchannaidu said the government would continue to coordinate closely with the Centre to ensure that farmers receive Minimum Support Price benefits and are protected from any losses.
