YSR Congress Party president and former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has alleged that the coalition government in Andhra Pradesh has weakened the rural economy due to administrative inefficiency and corruption.

In a post on the social media platform X , he criticised the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) , claiming that the state has slipped from its earlier position of strong performance under the scheme.

According to official MGNREGS MIS-based tracker data compiled by research organisations such as LibTech India, several key indicators show a decline in rural employment performance in Andhra Pradesh between FY 2024–25 and FY 2025–26.

The number of households completing 100 days of work fell from 5.1 lakh to 2.16 lakh , marking a 57.6% decline . The number of unique households that received work under the scheme declined from 46.94 lakh to 42.88 lakh , reflecting an 8.6% drop . Total persondays generated under MGNREGS also decreased from 2,422.84 lakh to 1,859.77 lakh , a fall of about 23.2% , according to tracker-based estimates.

The average workdays per household declined from 51.62 days to 43.37 days , indicating a reduction in employment intensity in rural areas.

Jagan Mohan Reddy argued that such a decline in rural employment has affected household incomes and reduced purchasing power in villages, which in turn impacts broader economic activity . He also linked the slowdown in GST and sales tax growth to weakening rural demand.

He further alleged that the government has prioritised other areas over welfare implementation, warning that continued neglect of employment guarantee schemes could lead to public dissatisfaction.
