Coal India's October Coal Production Rises 19.3%, Western Coalfields Leads Growth
State-owned Coal India Ltd (CIL) recorded a strong recovery in coal production in October, with output rising 19.3 per cent year-on-year to 67.2 million tonnes (MT), compared with 56.4 MT in October last year, according to provisional data submitted to stock exchanges.
The company also reported an 18.7 per cent increase in coal offtake, which rose to 70.3 MT from 59.2 MT a year earlier, indicating stronger dispatches to consumers.
However, the growth in October came against a relatively modest performance during the first seven months of the current financial year. Between April and October 2026-27, Coal India’s production increased just 0.7 per cent to 388.2 MT, compared with 385.5 MT in the corresponding period last year.

Among Coal India’s subsidiaries, Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) was the largest producer in October, recording 20.8 MT, a 25.3 per cent increase. South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) followed with 14.3 MT, up 17.4 per cent.
Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL) registered the sharpest growth, with production surging 64.7 per cent to 5.9 MT. Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL) and Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL) also reported strong increases of 27.9 per cent and 26.1 per cent, respectively.
Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL) produced 2.9 MT, up 7.1 per cent, while Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL) was the only major subsidiary to report a decline, with output falling 4.3 per cent to 11.4 MT.
The seven-month performance, however, remained uneven. Production declined at NCL, MCL and BCCL by 14.6 per cent, 4.2 per cent and 9.8 per cent, respectively. WCL, CCL and ECL recorded growth during the period.
