As Hyderabad continues its rapid transformation into a major urban and economic hub, the Telangana government is accelerating efforts to expand its public transport network. In a key development, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy met Union Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in New Delhi, urging swift approval for the ambitious second phase of the Hyderabad Metro project.

At the centre of discussions was the proposed ₹38,595 crore Phase-2 expansion , which aims to add 122.9 km across seven corridors . The Detailed Project Report has already been submitted to the Centre, with the state advocating a joint funding model to ensure timely execution. Officials believe that expanding the metro network is critical to tackling rising traffic congestion and improving urban connectivity in a city witnessing unprecedented growth.

The government is positioning Phase-2 as more than just an infrastructure upgrade. The new corridors are expected to link emerging residential zones , IT hubs, and peripheral areas currently underserved by public transport. By doing so, the project aims to reduce dependence on private vehicles and promote a more sustainable mobility ecosystem .

Looking ahead, the Chief Minister also proposed a Phase-3 corridor connecting the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport to the upcoming Future City , a planned economic hub. This corridor is seen as strategically important for boosting investment potential and enhancing connectivity between global gateways and new growth centres.

A significant policy shift supporting this expansion is the state’s move to take control of Phase-1 operations from Larsen & Toubro . Transitioning away from the earlier public-private partnership model , the government aims to streamline decision-making and accelerate future phases.

While challenges such as funding constraints , cost concerns, and political scrutiny remain, the Telangana government is confident that the metro expansion will deliver long-term benefits. With the Centre’s approval now crucial, the project is poised to play a defining role in shaping Hyderabad’s urban future , improving mobility, and supporting its continued economic rise.
