Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy met Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla at Raj Bhavan on Sunday. Though officially described as a courtesy meeting , it has gained significance as the MLC nomination of former cricketer and current minister Mohammed Azharuddin is pending with the Governor.

The Chief Minister requested approval for the two pending Governor-quota MLC nominations . Mohammed Azharuddin, who was sworn in as a minister on October 31 last year , is required under rules to get elected to either the Legislative Council or Assembly within six months (by April 30) . With the deadline approaching and no clearance yet for his nomination, the issue has triggered political discussion. Along with Azharuddin, the nomination of Prof. Kodandaram was also reportedly discussed.

Notably, a day earlier, Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao and Advocate General Sudarshan Reddy had met the Governor to deliberate on legal aspects related to the nominations.

The Governor also suggested measures to curb drug use in educational institutions , including administering a pledge to students . Discussions were held on an awareness programme scheduled at LB Stadium on June 12 . The Chief Minister assured that the government would consider the Governor’s suggestions and take appropriate action.

For Azharuddin to retain his ministerial position , the Governor’s approval must come within the next ten days . If the nomination is not finalized by April 30 , technical complications may arise. In this context, the government’s next steps have become a matter of interest.

Minister Sridhar Babu and Rajya Sabha member Vem Narender Reddy were also present at the meeting.
