Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Saturday demanded that the Centre immediately roll back the recent hike in petrol and diesel prices, alleging that the increase would impose a severe financial burden on common people and adversely affect several key sectors of the economy.

Responding on social media platform ‘X’, the Chief Minister criticised the Union government’s decision, describing it as highly unjust. He said the Centre, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had adopted an unfair approach by increasing fuel prices.

Revanth Reddy said it was inappropriate for the Centre to cite international tensions between the United States and Iran as a reason for raising domestic fuel prices. He alleged that the government was using global developments as a pretext to burden ordinary citizens.

Questioning the Centre over its election promises, the Chief Minister recalled that during the recent elections in four states and one Union Territory, the government had repeatedly assured people that petroleum product prices would not be increased. However, within ten days of the election results, fuel prices were raised by more than Rs. 3 per litre, which he termed a betrayal of public trust.

He accused the Centre of being more concerned about votes and electoral victories than public welfare, and demanded the immediate withdrawal of the fuel price hike. Revanth Reddy further alleged that the country’s economy had weakened due to what he called the Centre’s inefficient governance and misleading policies.

The Chief Minister said the Centre’s much-publicised ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ slogan had remained limited to electoral rhetoric and failed to deliver the expected results on the ground. He claimed that small and medium-scale industries were facing severe difficulties and that youth were struggling with a lack of employment opportunities.

Revanth Reddy also alleged that the promise of doubling farmers’ income had remained confined to paper. He pointed out that the value of the rupee had steadily declined over the past decade and had now fallen to its lowest level.

While the Centre claims to be transforming India into the world’s third-largest economy, it must explain to the people how imposing such a fuel burden on common citizens could be justified, the Chief Minister said.
