Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) spokesperson Ravula Sridhar has criticised Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for allegedly creating fear among people over the possible impact of El Niño, instead of reassuring them about the government’s preparedness to tackle a potential drought.

Speaking to the media on Saturday, Sridhar alleged that the Congress government was prioritising political activities over addressing public problems. He said the government should focus on practical measures to manage the possible crisis and explain how it planned to protect people from water shortages and other difficulties.

Sridhar said conducting meetings and delivering speeches about El Niño would not be sufficient. The government needed to formulate a clear action plan to deal with the challenges that could arise from changing weather conditions. He stressed that the Chief Minister had a responsibility to instill confidence among people that the administration was capable of handling the situation effectively.

Instead of merely warning the public about the possibility of drought, Revanth Reddy should explain the steps being taken to prevent or minimise its impact, Sridhar said. He urged the government to provide practical solutions and offer reassurance rather than fuel public anxiety.

Meanwhile, Revanth Reddy recently cautioned that El Niño could trigger prolonged drought-like conditions in Telangana. During a review meeting, he said the state could face such conditions from October 2026 to July 2027.

The Chief Minister warned that rising temperatures and increased evaporation could worsen water scarcity. He expressed concern that drinking water shortages could be more severe than irrigation water shortages, underlining the need for advance preparation.

Revanth Reddy also stressed the importance of alerting people early and involving them in water conservation efforts. He noted that developed countries were also confronting drought-related challenges, citing water shortages in Britain.

Referring to Maharashtra, he said some areas were facing restrictions on drinking water supplies. He also mentioned guidelines aimed at reducing water consumption by 20 per cent.

The developments have brought the need for water conservation and drought preparedness into focus, with Sridhar urging the state government to move beyond warnings and assure people through concrete measures.
