Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has announced financial and livelihood support for Shiva, popularly known as “Tank Bund Shiva,” for his life-saving efforts at Hussain Sagar Lake.

Shiva is no ordinary rescuer. For over two decades , he has remained a constant presence along Tank Bund, diving into the lake to rescue people attempting suicide or those who accidentally fall into the water. Various estimates suggest he has saved more than 100 lives and assisted in retrieving numerous bodies, often working alongside local police effectively serving as an informal first responder without institutional backing.

Recognising both his bravery and long-standing financial struggles, the Chief Minister invited Shiva’s family to the Secretariat and announced ₹5 lakh financial assistance . In a move aimed at long-term stability, Shiva’s son, Venumadhav, was also provided a Home Guard job , ensuring a steady source of income for the family.

The support extends beyond immediate relief. Upon learning that the family does not own a house, the Chief Minister directed officials to allot a double-bedroom home under the government housing scheme. Additionally, acting on Shiva’s request, authorities have been asked to explore setting up a swimming training facility near Tank Bund , enabling him to teach swimming and promote water safety while earning a dignified livelihood.

Shiva’s journey reflects years of selfless service carried out with little recognition. Despite risking his life repeatedly, he remained largely unnoticed until now. His family expressed deep gratitude, saying the government’s intervention has brought new hope and dignity into their lives.

The move has drawn praise from citizens, with many calling it a long-overdue acknowledgment of an ordinary man whose courage and compassion saved countless lives.
