CM Revanth launches Indiramma saree distribution program to empower women
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy officially launched the “Indiramma Saree Distribution” program, aimed at honoring girls and promoting women’s empowerment across the state.
Addressing the event, the CM said the government is committed to empowering one crore women by 2034 under its “Koti Mahila” initiative. He emphasized that the saree distribution program is a significant step toward enhancing women’s dignity and self-respect, ensuring that every girl receives a saree.
As part of the first phase, 65 lakh sarees will be distributed in rural areas by December 9. The second phase will cover municipalities and urban areas from March 1 to 8, coinciding with International Women’s Day. The CM highlighted that the program is intended to leave no woman or girl behind. “Every girl will receive a saree, and every women’s association should wholeheartedly support this effort,” he added.
Beyond sarees: Comprehensive women’s welfare programs
The program is inspired by Indira Gandhi’s vision for women’s welfare and goes beyond saree distribution. The Telangana government has implemented several initiatives to strengthen women’s social and economic standing, including:
• Reservations in local institutions for women
• Zero-interest loans to women’s associations
• Allocation of petrol pumps
• Subsidized LPG cylinders at ₹500
• Free bus travel under the “Mahalakshmi Scheme”
The CM also mentioned that women are being appointed as bus owners and that special initiatives are underway to promote solar power projects.
Tribute to Indira Gandhi
The launch coincided with the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. CM Revanth Reddy paid tribute at her statue on Necklace Road, Hyderabad, before beginning the saree distribution. Deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka, Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, Damodara Rajanarsimha, Vakiti Srihari, Konda Surekha, and Seethakka participated in the event. Sarees were distributed to representatives of women’s associations, marking the start of statewide distribution.
Ensuring transparency and smooth distribution
CM Revanth emphasized that the distribution process must be transparent, efficient, and free from errors or fraud. Each legislative constituency will have a designated officer to oversee the process. Advanced methods like facial recognition and Aadhaar verification will be used to ensure that every eligible girl receives her saree. The government aims to conduct the program in a festive atmosphere, leaving no room for complaints.
Strengthening economic empowerment
The Chief Minister also highlighted the government’s broader efforts to empower women financially, including providing ₹27,000 crore in zero-interest loans, free RTC travel, support for model schools, petrol pumps, and solar projects. He noted that the government is correcting past shortcomings where women’s associations were denied recognition or financial support due to lack of dress codes or administrative negligence.
Promoting women’s products
CM Reddy said women’s associations are being supported to market their products through local bazaars and online platforms like Amazon, aiming for national and international recognition. He reiterated that empowering girls economically will help address challenges within families, aligning with the government’s goal of making one crore women financially independent by 2034.
Representatives from women’s associations in Sircilla, Asifabad, and Narayanpet districts praised the quality and design of the sarees and shared updates about petrol pump projects under the CM’s guidance. Several ministers and senior officials attended the video conference with district representatives.
