CM Revanth heads to Delhi over polls, BC talks

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is set to visit Delhi again, reportedly to meet with Congress leaders and key central ministers. Sources say the discussions will focus on delayed local body elections and BC reservation issues, alongside other development-related matters concerning the state.

Local elections and BC reservations on the agenda: Local body elections in Telangana have been postponed, while the issue of BC (Backward Class) reservations remains unresolved. Although the state Congress government recently passed a bill granting 42% reservations to BCs in local bodies, it still awaits approval from the central government. Party sources say the CM plans to raise these issues with the leaders in Delhi. Critics allege that the BJP-led central government has delayed approval, making the Delhi visit politically significant.

Growing discontent within the party: The postponement of local elections has created anxiety within the Congress party. Pressure is mounting from farmers and BC communities. During a recent Public Accounts Committee (PAC) meeting, discussions on these issues were deferred. Meanwhile, opposition parties, including BRS, may use these delays for political gains. BRS leader KTR commented that Revanth Reddy’s “honeymoon period” is over. In this context, the Delhi visit could strengthen Revanth Reddy’s political standing.

Party unity and political strategy: Revanth Reddy’s meetings with Congress leaders are always closely watched. During previous visits, he met senior leaders like KC Venugopal and discussed various political issues. Some social media speculation suggests he may also be arranging funding for the upcoming Bihar elections, but party sources emphasize the trip is primarily for Telangana’s interests. Congress leaders argue that these meetings could help maintain party unity, especially amid growing pressure from BC leaders.

Focus on development issues: Alongside political discussions, Revanth Reddy will meet central ministers to push development projects. In past visits, he met Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman, and Rajnath Singh to discuss roads, financial aid, and defense land allocations. Key projects like the Hyderabad-Bandar Greenfield Highway, Musi Riverfront, and Gandhi Sarovar projects are also on the agenda. Revanth Reddy has invited British companies to participate in the Musi Riverfront project, reflecting his strategy to strengthen ties with the central government despite a BJP-led center.

Challenges and opportunities: With two years of his government completed, Revanth Reddy faces pressure to hold local elections. Strengthening the BC vote bank could consolidate Congress’s position, while failure might benefit opposition parties. Successful development projects could boost his image, while coordination with Delhi ensures smoother funding and approvals. However, if state funds are diverted to national elections, it could become controversial. Some opposition parties are already criticizing saying repeated Delhi visits have yielded no results. The outcome of this visit could influence both political balance and social justice issues in Telangana.
